An interview with gossip columnist Michael Musto on the art of celebrity journalism

Sunday, October 7, 2007

There are two things one can expect on a trip to see Michael Musto at the offices of the Village Voice: a 20-minute round-trip wait for the elevator and rapid fire answers from one of the most recognizable gossip columnists in the United States. Musto, in addition to his appearances on Countdown with Keith Olbermann and the E! network, has been writing his column for the Voice since 1984. He has recently compiled the best of them in a book released this year titled, La Dolce Musto: Writings by the World’s Most Outrageous Columnist. He was Carrie Bradshaw, replete with a prodigious use of puns, before Sex in the City was a thought. His column is a romp through his life, spats and opinions on socio-political issues. As David Thigpen of the Chicago Tribune wrote, Musto is “a funny and caustic satirist who masquerades as a gossip and nightlife columnist.”

Musto, a Columbia University graduate, is a rarity in today’s celebrity world: he is accessible. He often corresponds with his readers and his public functions are a mix of parties, nightclubs, academic lectures, university panels and film premieres.

He is friendly and frank, and he welcomes people to join him in his world (“I just got a message that Michael Lucas died!” he says staring wide-eyed at his phone; the message turned out to be false). Wikinews reporter David Shankbone spoke with Musto about his life and his relationship to the world of celebrity journalism. And he did not hold back.

Mental Visualization, Goal Setting, Feedback And Self Talk}

Submitted by: Hanson Bo

Mental visualization is a key sport psychology skill that coaches can help their athletes develop. This may entail specific training sessions that practice mental visualization of the perfect execution of technique or practicing the race or game plan. It can also be as simple as a few minutes of visualization before practice commences where the athletes see themselves successfully performing their sporting behaviours and techniques. Before a training session, coaches can ask their athletes to think about what it is they are about to do and then see themselves performing the training effectively.

Visualization often requires an athlete to firstly relax, mentally focus on the present and then run through what is to be rehearsed in their mind. If a coach isnt yet confident in being able to run visualization sessions with their athletes, then engage a sport psychologist to teach and mentor the coach on how to do this well. There is also a great deal of information available on this topic in books and on the internet. This is a great skill coaches can get great at and teach their athletes.

Another sport psychology area that is relatively simple but vitally important is goal setting. Coaches can enhance their effectiveness by ensuring their athletes have set SMART goals. These are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time framed. Every successful athlete needs to set goals and then know to break these goals into smaller chunks. Coaches can keep their athletes on track by constantly having smaller goals to focus on each session that contribute to the more significant strategic goals for the whole season or overall athletes development. Having these smaller goals also teaches narrow concentration skills and how to focus on the process rather than the outcome of a performance.

Again, there are numerous resources available on this topic.

A coach can also use an effective feedback model combined with appropriate positive language. For example, when a coach tells their athlete what they are doing incorrectly, they must also explain how to fix the technical error. When the athlete attempts to fix the technique, the coach should positively encourage the athlete for their effort and to support them to train outside of their personal comfort zone. This helps boost the athletes self-belief in their ability to make changes and they begin to feel more comfortable while operating outside of their comfort zone. We recommend the feedback sandwich which is detailed in the article Delivering Feedback to Your Athletes.

The final sport psychology concept to cover which coaches can teach their athletes is how to monitor their own self-talk. Everyone talks to themselves. (It is that voice now that is asking whether you talk to yourself!) What an athlete says to themselves impacts their performance. By asking your athletes to begin to notice their internal conversations and if they are positive or not, can help an athlete begin to change negative self-talk. An athletes internal conversation is often a representation of their own self-beliefs sometimes strengthening beliefs and sometimes limiting. Once again, becoming aware of these internal conversations is the first step towards changing them to be more positive and hence being able to create better performances. You might like to also refer to the article What to do when your rowers dont compete as well as they train for more on this topic.

Sports coaches who have developed their own skills in the above areas, are the best qualified to teach their athletes these critical sport psychology skills to improve their performances. This way they are continuously reinforced during training and more effective on competition day. Remember, the most critical contributor to athletic performance is the coach-athlete relationship. Dedicate time to develop these relationships to improve your sporting results. This starts with understanding yourself and your athletes.

Triple limb-reattachment fails – boy loses foot

Tuesday, April 5, 2005Terry Vo, the 10-year old Australian boy who had two hands and a foot reattached by surgeons after losing them in an accident, has had to have the foot re-amputated. He will be given a prosthetic foot in its place.

The operation to re-attach three limbs was thought to have been a first – but was ultimately unsuccessful, with the foot having died inside, and receiving insufficient blood supply following the surgery to reattach it.

“That would lead to the small muscles in the foot actually constricting, the toes bending over and a deformed …. foot that is sort of clawed over and doesn’t have good sensation,” said plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love today, on Australia’s ABC Radio.

“Even if you can get all of that to survive, he [would be] worse off than having had an amputation.”

“What is very disappointing is that for the first two days after [the operation] the foot looked absolutely magnificent,” he said.

Terry’s hands were healing well, said the surgeon. The prosthetic foot would allow him to walk normally, since his knee was intact.

Team formed to investigate suspicious Pakistan PNSC office fire

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Babar Ghauri, Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping, has told reporters at a press conference that an investigative team has been formed to look into the causes of a suspicious fire two days ago at the Karachi office of the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC).

One office worker was killed and four firefighters were injured in the multi-storey blaze. Another man had to be rescued from the roof via helicopter. 31 people were in the office at the time of the fire, including eight PNSC security guards and six other PNSC personnel, the rest working for private companies.

The provincial investigation team’s findings are expected to be announced in around fifteen days. In addition, the Karachi Building Control Authority and several private organizations have been asked to inspect the building, and the course of action to be taken regarding the site will be determined after they have submitted their reports. “Even if the current PNSC building is demolished, it will be replaced by another PNSC building. The plot will not be given to anyone else,” Ghauri said.

“I have spoken to the prime minister on the telephone. I told him that the incident should be investigated by independent parties and ministry personnel should not be part of these investigation teams,” Ghauri said. Meanwhile, the Senate Standing Committee on Ports and Shipping confirmed that they will send a team to assist in investigative efforts.

The fire, which consumed floors four to ten, is being treated as suspicious because it is the second the building has suffered this year. The previous fire, which occurred on February 18, was deemed by a multi-national investigation at the time to have been caused by an electrical fault. The minister has, however, promised that the fact both fires occurred on a Sunday will be part of the investigation.

This latest fire has destroyed the records of several private shipping companies, causing Farhatullah Babar of the Pakistan Peoples Party to declare that the fire was a deliberate act to destroy undesirable PNSC documents. However, Ghauri was dismissive of the allegations, saying “Babar merely wants some cheap publicity and leveled allegations at us,” and adding that PNSC records have not been affected by the fire. The records are computerised, and stored on the untouched first floor. The offices destroyed by the fire housed private corporations, such as Mega Shipping Company, Attock Cement, Engro, Meezan Bank and others.

There was already a known security issue in the building, with PNSC Chairman Tanvir Naqvi telling reporters “We were just about to issue tenders for improving security in the building when this happened.”

People described as ‘sources in the PNSC’ told reporters that the building was constructed by a company based in Turkey for Rs 30 million in 1958. “This building will not be demolished. Damages will be repaired and the building can be made usable,” said one.

One man who worked on the fourth floor of the structure, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to represent the PNSC, told the Daily Times newspaper that “The fire initially did not break out on the fourth floor,” as originally reported, saying instead “At around 2:00 p.m. we saw smoke coming through our lighting fixtures. Within 36 seconds the smoke was so thick that we could not recognize people standing right in front of us. There is no air exhaust system on the emergency exits. If we had not evacuated immediately, we would have suffocated and died on the emergency exits.”

He goes on to claim that of a number of PNSC employees present, not one knew how to operate the fire extinguishers supplied. They started panicking. I broke the glass and used the hose to try to put the fire out. But the smoke was too thick. We were in contact with Adeel (the worker on the roof of the building).”

“The fire started in the ducts of the building. The pillars had already been damaged by the February blaze. This time around, the fire was more intense.”

Leather Bag Or Canvas Bag Which Is The Right Bag For You?}

Submitted by: Amanda T Smith

With the world rejecting plastic bags in favour of environment-friendly bags, the leather bags and canvas bags are fast gaining popularity. Both the types of bags come in different shapes, sizes and colours and both have their own distinct styles. So when you want to choose one of these bags, the selection of the right one becomes difficult. You might want a bag that meets all your needs but the question is which one should you opt for? That is a very difficult choice to make. A good place to start will be by weighing the respective pros and cons of each type of bag. You might want to consider the following points before you select.

Price: Cost can be an important point to take into account when making any purchase decision. In most cases, a canvas bag will be found to be cheaper than a leather bag. In fact, the better the quality of the leather and the stitching, the higher will be the price. Canvas bag, on the other hand, does not cost much as the material used in making canvas bags is much cheaper than leather.

Status: Precisely because the leather bag is costlier, it is often considered to be more upmarket than a canvas bag. Though both the bags are of good quality, the leather one is considered chic. So, if you are looking for a bag that proclaims high class to the world, you might consider leather over canvas.

Wear and Tear: Both the bags should last a long time and can be used time and again. However, the canvas bags are easier to maintain. They can be folded easily. They can also be washed a lot. Leather has to be taken care of. A leather bag will have to be used right, cleaned right and stored right to get the maximum mileage from it. In case of minor wear and tear, you can fix the canvas bags but the leather ones might need to be taken to professionals. If you accidentally wet your canvas bag, you do not have to worry while the same cannot be said for leather.

Maintenance: As mentioned before, leather bag is more difficult to maintain than a canvas one. The canvas bags can be hand washed or machine-washed without harming the fabric. Even tough stains and marks can be removed from a canvas bag- just as you would remove stains from your cotton clothes. For leather, especially high-quality leather, you will need special cleansers.

Style and Occasion: Your choice of bag also depends on the reason for which you need the bag. If you want a casual bag for taking to the beach or for going grocery shopping, canvas bag might be a better option. If you want to carry your bag around for formal occasions, then you will be better off with a leather bag. While both leather and canvas styles do not go out-of-fashion for a long time, leather looks classier.

Canadian boy, sucked into water pump, loses feet

Tuesday, July 11, 2006

A seven-year-old boy’s feet were severed after he was sucked into a water pump at a swimming pool. He is in intensive care as police investigate the water-park accident.

He was seriously injured yesterday when his feet became stuck in a pump that circulates water in one of the pools at Le Camping des Glissades d’eau St-Pie, in Sainte-Pie, Québec, 55 km (35 miles) east of Montréal.

Doctors amputated the boy’s legs below the knee. The boy will be given prosthetic feet.

“He should be able to walk by the end of the summer and to be back to school,” said, doctors. “He will have to learn to walk again.”

Park spokesman Denis Arcand said, “the pump did not have a protective grill over it at the time of the accident”.

The park is now closed and will stay closed while police are investigating.

Volvo announces all new car models electric or hybrid from 2019

Friday, July 7, 2017

On Wednesday, automobile company Volvo announced all of its cars to be released in 2019 onwards are to use some form of battery-powered engine, leaving conventional petrol-only vehicles altogether. The decision comes after Volvo announced in May their intent to cease production of diesel vehicles.

The chief executive of Volvo Cars, Håkan Samuelsson, said, “People increasingly demand electrified cars”. Volvo aims to release five new electric vehicle models between 2019 and 2021. While little has yet been revealed about them, the company has stated two of them are to be high-performance electric vehicles, branded as Polestars.

Other car models from 2019 may be plug-in hybrid or 48-volt “mild hybrid” systems. Audi and Mercedes-Benz are also releasing mild hybrid cars for the European market.

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car. Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it,” Samuelsson said. Volvo is owned by Chinese automotive giant Geely, and China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has said by 2025 they want new vehicle sales to be 20 percent “new energy vehicles”.

Uncontested Divorce Steps To Choosing Your Lawyer

By Lawrence J. Reaves

Any type of divorce is unpleasant, even if you are fortunate enough to still be friendly with your partner, so can go for an uncontested divorce.

Importantly, always work with your partner and get them involved if possible. This way your partner will not feel left out or that there are things going on that may have an adverse effect.

So if you live in Virginia and have done for at least six months, check out law firms operating in Virginia who you feel best suits your joint needs. Check out websites and then work out a short list and call them. Don’t make your choice without talking to them; you need to make sure they are right for you.

Check out the rates each of the law firms on your short list charge. Don’t choose law firms who want retainers. Uncontested divorce is simple and quick so the law firm you select needs to let you know from the start how much it will cost. The quicker you want your divorce completed, the more it’s likely to cost, but don’t expect to pay more than about $1,000. In fact you may be able to get the divorce complete for less than $500.

Select a law firm that doesn’t need you to travel to their offices. Many specialist uncontested divorce lawyers operate from small premises and have little overheads; it means the fees are less, but the service you get will be as good. There is no requirement to meet with your chosen lawyer, everything can be done by email, mail and phone. It saves you time, money and makes completing the paperwork easy and convenient; you can do it on line when you get home from work at a time that suits you.

When you call your chosen law firm, ask them to let you know what court rejection rate they have. Courts reject uncontested divorce papers, if they feel there are inaccuracies, or they are presented properly. If a court rejects divorce papers, it will slow up the proceedings as they have to be represented; it can also incur extra court costs. If your law firm has a low rejection rate, it means they are going to get your case dealt with quickly, which is what you and your partner want.

Make sure you fit the criteria required by your law firm before completing any paperwork. It will save time and will also mean that you won’t have to get more information, or even choose another firm. For example, in Virginia, if you want to get an uncontested divorce through in a few weeks you need to have resided in Virginia for at least six months so it’s not much good applying if you have only lived in Virginia for a couple of weeks.

Next, you need to have been separated from your partner for at least six months and, if you have small children, then you normally have to be separated for a year or more.

Uncontested divorce is the best method, so long as both parties agree.

Bikers begin descent on South Carolina resort for rallies

Saturday, May 14, 2005

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina —This weekend is the kick-off for two motorcycle rallies held annually in the U.S. eastern seacoast town of Myrtle Beach. Enthusiasts this year are expected to meet or exceed the 170,000 bikers that arrived last year in droves to the small resort town of 23,000. Festivities span two weeks, and extend again this year into the Memorial Day.

Leading off is the week-long Harley rally, followed by the next week’s BikeFest. In and around town, both day and night are punctured by the sounds of bike engines gunned and revved at stop lights and in parking lots. Groups of cycle riders dominate the streets.

“By Friday night, the front parking lot will be a full line of motorcycles to the corner.” said motel owner Ranjan Patel. The Super 8 motel takes up half a block at its location in the heart of the downtown motel strip. “Both sides [of Ocean Blvd] are nothing but bikes.” Both she and her co-owner husband agree, the influx of bikers dwarf in size the numbers of tourists who visit during regular summer months for ocean-side and family amusement park attractions.

The highly accesorised bikes, decked with chrome and polished to show it, flashed the townscape. Choppers made a showing, but road hogs dominated the ridership, often going twosome. Many rally goers arrived on the scene with SUV’s or big pickup trucks towing cargo trailers loaded with cycles.

Growth in the sheer size of the two rallies led police to make changes in the handling of traffic flow. During BikeFest last year, the mostly black crowd that came in on the heels of the largely white Harley rally the week earlier, were faced with confusion when the two-lane Ocean Blvd was made one-way.

A branch of the NAACP in Conway, the next town over from Myrtle Beach, alleged discrimination by Horry County and Myrtle Beach Police. They claimed authorities and police used an overwhelming and aggressive police presence, combined with a restrictive one-way traffic pattern, to intimidate and discourage the participants in the rally.

An injunction was issued earlier this week by U.S. District Judge Terry Wooten, who ruled that bikers at both rallies be treated the same. Myrtle Beach city lawyers immediately filed an appeal to the ruling at the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, saying “the trial court erroneously determined that the plaintiffs would likely succeed on the merits; that is, that the city of Myrtle Beach intentionally treats Memorial Day weekend tourists differently from others similarly situated because of their race.”

A plan to submit an opposition to the notice has already been announced by Michael Navarre, an attorney for Steptoe & Johnson, who represents the NAACP civil rights group. “We certainly don’t think the judge has ruled erroneously,” Navarre said, according to The Sun News.

Traffic control and safety measures were in full swing Friday morning on US-17. Both directions of the 4-lane divided highway south of Myrtle Beach had traffic cones and parking barriers set up to control traffic. Large flashing road signs on each side of the highway warned cars to use the passing lane. The warning sign flashed a message that the right lane was for motorcycle use only. Police monitored the pull-offs near a Harley dealer’s lot where popular attractions were set-up in the immediate vicinity.
