Tornado touches down in Joplin, Missouri

Monday, May 23, 2011

A tornado touched down yesterday in Joplin, Missouri, causing widespread damage. At least 89 were killed.

The path of the tornado was reported to be from one half to three quarters of a mile wide. City spokeswoman Lynn Onstot estimated the path to be nearly four miles long; Jasper County emergency management director Keith Stammer put its length around six miles.

You see pictures of World War II, the devastation and all that with the bombing. That’s really what it looked like.

Witnesses described entire blocks of buildings destroyed. Steve Runnels of the National Weather Service said “We have reports of significant structural damage to strong buildings. Automobiles have been flipped, bark was stripped off trees.”

Among the properties damaged was a local hospital, St. John’s Regional Medical Center. Some patients were hurt, and all were evacuated to other regional hospitals. The local high school, Joplin High School, was also hit. Describing the damage, its principal, Kerry Sachetta, said “You see pictures of World War II, the devastation and all that with the bombing. That’s really what it looked like. I couldn’t even make out the side of the building.”

Joplin has a population of about 50,000.

President Barack Obama has ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support state and local efforts in response and recovery. He issued a statement with condolences to the families of victims.

CanadaVOTES: NDP candidate Paul Arbour in Carleton—Mississippi Mills

Friday, October 10, 2008

In an attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with Paul Arbour. Arbour is a candidate in Ontario’s Carleton—Mississippi Mills riding, running under the New Democratic Party (NDP) banner.

The riding is currently represented by Gordon O’Connor, a Conservative. The Minister of National Revenue, O’Connor is up against the NDP’s Arbour, Liberal Justin Mackinnon, and Green Jake Cole. Previous MPs in the riding were Progressive Conservative, Liberal, and Canadian Alliance members. A riding since 1988, Carleton—Mississippi Mills is in the Capital region.

The following is an interview with Arbour, conducted via email. The interview has had very limited editing, to eliminate in-text mentions of website addresses, but is otherwise left exactly as sent to Wikinews.

Overview Of The Tamerica Tcc Sp41 Coil Binding Machine

By James Ian Hill

Do you like to bind your own recipe books, manuals, presentations, reports and other books. Many people find coil binding to be one of the most fun and most functional binding formats available. One solid coil binding machine that you may want to consider using for your own bookbinding operations is the Tamerica TCC-SP41. I have used this machine and would like to give you an overview on what I think of it.

Tamerica is a leading manufacturer of office equipment in the United States. Their lineup of office equipment entails binding machines, paper cutters, laminators and other specialized office machinery. Tamerica products have always been considered a good budget alternative to other machines such as those made by Akiles. Tamerica machines are affordable and typically come packed with features.

The Tamerica TCC-SP41 is a 4:1 pitch coil binding machine. The pitch, also referred to as the hole pattern, determines how many holes per inch the paper punch will create. A 4:1 pitch machine punches four holes per inch of paper. This ends up being about 44 holes along the 11″ side of a sheet of paper. While the TCC-SP41 easily handles letter-size paper, it can also be used with paper up to 14″ long, A4 paper, B5 paper and custom paper sizes. The 4:1 pitch binding pattern is the most common used in coil binding. The other available pitch in coil binding is 5:1, which is five holes per inch. The 4:1 pitch is popular because it binds up to 1 1/4″ of paper at a time.

One of the features that makes binding custom paper sizes a possibility is the selectable punching pins included with this machine. A total of 53 punching pins can each be individually disabled or enabled, depending on the size of the paper you are binding. This means you can punch an 8 1/2″ long sheet of paper without worrying about a half-punched hole. The TCC-SP41 can also be used to punch through card stock, clear covers and more.

The TCC-SP41 can punch through up to 20 sheets of paper, which is impressive for a manual punch machine. The long handle is leveraged in such a way that punching 20 sheets of paper doesn’t require a lot of effort. High-quality hollow ground dies also help assist in the punching process. Hollow dies, because there is less surface area, slices through paper. Punched “chad” falls into a waste collection tray for later emptying.

Overall this is a solid machine. The only downside is that it does not include an electric coil inserter. Coils have to be manually inserted by hand. To compensate for this, and to make manual coil insertion easier, the TCC-SP41 comes with a concealed pop-up coil insertion table. This helps you to guide coils through the punched holes.

I would consider the TCC-SP41 to be an entry-level machine. While the build quality is excellent, the lack of an electric coil inserter will slow down the binding process. This machine is probably best used for binding a few dozen books a day, making it ideal for small business use. You will find the Tamerica TCC-SP41 at ABCOffice.com.

US Federal Reserve ceases to publish M3 index

Thursday, April 27, 2006

 • M0: Is total of all physical currency, plus accounts at the central bank which can be exchanged for physical currency.
 • M1: Is the M0 as well as the amount in demand accounts (“checking” or “current” accounts).
 • M2: Is the M1 as well as most savings accounts, money market accounts, and certificate of deposit accounts (CDs) of under $100,000.
 • M3: Is the M2 as well as all other CDs, deposits of eurodollars and repurchase agreements.

? from Wikipedia, The Free EncyclopediaMoney Supply

On March 23, 2006 the Federal Reserve ceased publication of the M3 monetary aggregate, in line with an announcement it made in November, 2005. The M3 is a measure of money supply in the United States,

The M3 is most general of the many measures of money supply, the quantity of money available within the economy for purchasing goods, services, and securities. The money supply is monitored and adjusted by a central bank, to keep inflation in check, because money supply has to change in tune with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to prevent inflation (or deflation).

In November last year, the US Federal Reserve announced that it would cease publishing M3 data, saying, “[the] M3 does not appear to convey any additional information about economic activity that is not already embodied in M2 and has not played a role in the monetary policy process for many years”, adding that the costs of collecting the data required for the index outweighed its benefits.

Some commentators have questioned this decision and have speculated that this would allow the Federal reserve to covertly fund the US budget deficit and its negative balance of trade or hide the fall in international demand for the US dollar. In March, 2006, Rep. Ron Paul introduced a bill (HR 4892) requiring the Federal Reserve to reverse its decision.

US Food and Drug Administration reports melamine found in contaminated pet food

Friday, March 30, 2007

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced at a press conference today that a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics was found in recalled pet food from Menu Foods.

The FDA found melamine in samples of Menu Foods pet food and in samples of wheat gluten, imported from China, which was used as an ingredient. The FDA analysis, however, does not confirm the presence of the rodenticide aminopterin, which was reported March 23 by the New York State Food Laboratory.

According to Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, melamine is used primarily to make plastic kitchenware, although it has been used as a fertilizer in Asia.

Sundlof also indicated that the presence of melamine in the urine of cats that died from kidney failure was revealed through testing. He stressed that melamine was not determined to be the source of illness or deaths in the affected animals.

Sundlof suggested that melamine would not be found normally in pet food.

At a news conference Friday, Paul Henderson, President and CEO of Menu Foods, indicated that Menu Foods is satisfied that the contamination problem was related to melamine and not aminopterin. “One week ago, some of the dedicated researchers who had been investigating this matter reported the discovery of a single, toxic compound in our pet food,” said Henderson in his opening statement. “That, seemingly, cleared the way for us to address the problem, deal fairly with the pet-owners who had been injured, put our business back together, and move on,” he continued.

“In the intervening week, other top scientists have been unable to validate the findings. That is, they were unable to find the toxin – called aminopterin – in our pet food, or in any of the component ingredients. It was also brought to our attention that some veterinary experts held the view that aminopterin was inconsistent with what was being observed in dogs and cats,” Henderson said.

Menu Foods has determined that melamine in wheat gluten from a new US supplier was the likely source of contamination, and that they are confident that the issue has been resolved. “Melamine has been found in the wheat gluten from a new supplier in the United States, who sourced this wheat gluten in China,” said Henderson. “This is the same ingredient that Menu Foods made reference to in its recall press release of March 16. Melamine has not been found in the wheat gluten that we obtain from our other suppliers.”

Henderson refused to name the supplier of the wheat gluten, leaving that up to the FDA. “We have had correspondence with the FDA and we know that they are diligently following-up on the supply of the suspect wheat gluten. It is not our place to name the supplier as we do not want to interfere in any way with the important investigation they are conducting.”

Menu Foods is maintaining the warning on the previously recalled product. “The recalled product is unfit for consumption by pets. It contains melamine. The pet food that we have manufactured after March 6 is safe and healthy,” stated Henderson.

Menu Foods is the manufacturer of several brands of cat and dog food subject to a March 16, 2007 recall.

Groomsmen Gifts To Give Them A Blast}

Submitted by: Nick Hill

All right, so your wedding is in a weeks time. Your long-time buddies have been acting weird around you lately. You think its because you gave them that go-ahead to organize an awesome stag party for you. It can get wackier though when you surprise them with a present that surely will get them bowled over. Sometimes its easier to come out from the norm and more often these out of the norm surprises are the best groomsmen gift ideas of all time; that is if your guys are not only great but weird types too.

Not all guys will agree with me when Im giving some great-looking hunk a barbeque branding iron. Hes not sissy or what, but hes got blood running in him from his old west ancestry. This will lead him down memory lane when dad just came home from a day in the cattle trail and looks forward to a BBQ dinner outdoors under the canopy of stars. Out came the grill and large slabs of meat sizzling in open flame. Ive a piece of advice though, dont get him teary-eyed.

What makes something a best groomsmen gift idea is not an all-money-out giveaway. That branding iron will not really cost you a house mortgage, but youre giving more when you take time to know what his fetish is. When one of your great guys is that kind whos warmed many a bleacher seat to throw away popcorns at whoever he finds out bashing his favorite team, then for the life of me, get him a world series game ticket. Triple the fun when you join him raving at the stadium. It may rain and all like the Philies and Rays game, but man, you rock!

If you got a geeky, pretty much on his own man in the group, theres always a list of best groomsmen gift ideas to look into. You can think of something he can just pop in his hard drive or his portable DVD player. You can give him a DVD movie about groomsmen or a PC game he wants to have. Or what do you know? There are a couple gadgets to choose from as a gift, if you hadnt thought of anything better, not to mention cheaper.

Speaking of gadgets, with global recession going on and youre into the belt-tightening mode, then might as well get a perfect solution to his gadget frenzy: a gadget case. One of the best groomsmen gift ideas is something thats trendy and he can put into good use, and what can be more suited to that than a blackberry case? Consider giving him something like a personalized leather desk caddie that he can use in his office. Your groomsmen will surely appreciate that because its something that can serve a purpose daily. Or if he hadnt bought one yet, you can get him a lightweight laptop case. These are just tip of the iceberg. Theres more when you really want to give them a blast!

Disney to shut down Blue Sky Studios, animation studio behind ‘Ice Age’

Wednesday, February 10, 2021

Yesterday, US-based entertainment company Disney announced its plans to shut down Blue Sky Studios, the animation studio behind the Ice Age movie franchise.

“Given the current economic realities, after much consideration and evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to close filmmaking operations at Blue Sky Studios”, Walt Disney Studios said in the statement. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio will cease producing a movie-adaptation of Nimona, which was scheduled to be released next year.

Based in Greenwich, Connecticut, Blue Sky Studios was founded in 1987, and was later acquired by 20th Century FOX in 1999. Blue Sky’s control went to Disney in 2019 when Disney bought assets of FOX Studios for around US$71 billion. Blue Sky had worked on Joe’s Apartment, A Simple Wish, Alien Resurrection, and Fight Club. The studio went on to produce five Ice Age films, two Rio movies, The Peanuts Movie as well as Ferdinand, which received an Academy Award nomination for best animated feature film.

Disney also owns two other significant animation studios, Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney has closed Radio Disney and Radio Disney Country. Disney planned last year to lay off about 32 thousand employees, many from Disney’s theme parks. Disney also sold mobile video game unit FoxNext Games Los Angeles. Disney reported a US$2.8 billion net loss in the 2020 fiscal year.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

The Importance Of Ac Installation In San Antonio Tx For Your Health

byadmin

If you have ever been to Texas, you know how hot the summer months can get there. For this reason, it is very important to have functioning air conditioning in your home to keep it cool and comfortable. Proper AC Installation in San Antonio TX is important for everyone, but it is especially important for people who have medical conditions that reduce their tolerance for heat, as high temperatures without air conditioning can negatively affect people with certain health problems.

Even for people without any significant medical problems, the hot and humid climate of some parts of the world would make them unlivable without some form of climate control. For people in full health, high heat and humidity can cause cloudy thoughts, irritability and fatigue. These conditions can make even the simplest daily tasks a chore without air conditioning. AC Installation in San Antonio TX helps to ensure that you are comfortable in your home and never struggling to get through the day because of high temperatures.Dehydration is a serious concern if you do not have air conditioning in your home. Because sweat is about 95 percent water, it is very easy to become dehydrated in environments where you would be sweating constantly. In excessive heat such as this, it is recommended that you are drinking at least 10 ounces of water every 10 to 15 minutes. Having adequate air conditioning in your home can alleviate these concerns.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two of the biggest dangers associated with prolonged exertion in a hot environment. The risk of heat exhaustion is directly related to the heat index, or how hot it feels inside of your home. When the heat index is over 90 degrees, heat exhaustion can set on in as little as an hour. If your home is not properly cooled, you should be watching for symptoms of heat exhaustion such as headache, nausea, severe fatigue and excessive thirst.

Having an air conditioner installed by a professional HVAC company is the most important thing you can do to keep your home comfortable and safe no matter where you live or which season it is.
