Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews

Sunday, June 28, 2020

Last month, a study conducted by archæologist Dr. Naomi Martisius and other researchers concluded Neanderthals living in Europe tens of thousands of years ago were more sophisticated than previously thought. The now-extinct species used to carefully select bones from a particular animal species to manufacture their bone tools, the research showed. The research was published on May 8 in Nature’s Scientific Reports journal.

Dr Martisius and her team used five bone tools discovered from Neanderthals’ sites in southwest France for this research. Four of these bone tools were found in a site called Abri Peyrony and the other one was from Pech-de-l’Azé I. These tools were just a few centimetres in size and were about 50 thousand years old, Dr Martisius told Wikinews. Microscopy analysis of these bone tools called lissoirs (smoothers) suggested Neanderthals used these tools for working animal skin to leathers.

The study stated the fauna of the sites were primarily medium-sized ungulates such as reindeer, in one layer nearly 90%. Despite the overabundance of medium-sized ungulates, Neanderthals used ribs of large bovids for making lissoirs. Dr Martisius told Wikinews this was likely due to the physical characteristics of the bovid ribs, which were “thicker” and “stronger” as compared to the “thin and flimsy ribs” of reindeers. In order to check the origins of the bone tools, the researchers used a technology called non-destructive Zooarchæology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS).

Instead of damaging the bone artefacts in order to discover its origins, the researchers collected collagen from the plastic containers in which these artefacts were kept. Collagen is a type of protein. These bone artefacts were kept in plastic containers: some were kept for about five years, some for just a few months. During this time, the collagen proteins from bone tools were stuck to the walls of its plastic containers. The collagen samples collected from the walls of the containers are broken into smaller molecules called peptides by using a chemical enzyme called trypsin.

After the trypsin has broken collagen fibres into peptides, it is analysed using a technology called Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). The assisting matrix is a coloured compound. The acidic peptide is combined with the matrix, vapourised, and peptides are released. Some of them are positively-charged particles which travel across a vacuum tube in an electric field. Depending on the weight of the peptides, these molecules reach the end of the vacuum tube at different instances of time, forming a spectrum. These graphs are like unique fingerprints of a species: they are different for different species of animals. Looking at the database of such graphs, taxonomic identifications of the collagen proteins came be made.

All four bone tools from Abri Peyrony gave positive results and showed that the bones were made from large bovids, even though reindeer were more abundant during that time. One of the advantages of using bovid ribs over reindeer’s thin ribs was the bovid ribs would be more resistant to breaking during flexion, Dr Martisius said.

Dr Martisius said such non-destructive ZooMS analysis was previously conducted, but for tools no older than a few centuries. She said such an analysis had never been previously conducted for artefacts so ancient.

Wikinews caught up with Dr Martisius to discuss this research in-depth.

An account of the Esperanza Fire from an animal rescuer

Saturday, December 2, 2006

As families fled their homes in the early morning hours on Thursday October 26, there was no warning. The Esperanza Fire southeast of Los Angeles and West of Palm Springs, California, had ballooned under the influence of Santa Ana winds to more than 19,000 acres as of the morning of October 27. No time to get the animals, no time for crates or even a leash. Sadly, owners left behind not only their horses, lamas, donkeys, chickens, rabbits, but also their dogs and cats.

Many of the families who did manage to evacuate their pets found themselves in the parking lot at the Fellowship in the Pass Church Red Cross Shelter where a MuttShack Animal Rescue team caught up with them.

Pam Anderson, Director of the emergency Red Cross shelter said that many people with animals had come and left.

The air was thick with smoke, and ash was raining down on the parking lot where dog owners, not able to take their dogs into the shelter were camping out in pup tents andin their cars.

Those who could afford it checked themselves into pet friendly hotels in nearby towns.

Some were prepared. Jane Garner, a small dog breeder was able to get all her animals out, and had set up her puppy runs alongside her RV in the parking lot. Others were not doing too well, having left home without as much as a leash.

The same scenario played out at the Red Cross shelter at Hemet High School. Animals were being boarded in vans, trailers and cars and small travel crates.

When MuttShack Animal Rescue arrived, a small fracas had sent several dogs off in different directions, running out of the school parking lot down busy streets necessitating an instant rescue response.

The Incident Command for the Esperanza Animals, Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto welcomed MuttShack‘s offer to help at the shelters.

Ramona Humane Society had recently published a notice in their Newsletter about the newly passed “PETS Act”and warned owners not wait until a major disaster such as an earthquake or fireto prepare. “Be proactive to ensure that your pet will be taken care of.”

MuttShack and PetSmart Charities set up ad hoc facilities for the animals at both shelters.

The Red Cross shelter, run by Madison Burtchaell of the Orange County Red Cross was very accommodating about allowing a small emergency pet shelter adjacent to the School.

Barbara A. Fought of PetSmart Charities, an organization that works with animal welfare organizations and provide assistance in disasters, provided crates and emergency supplies.

MuttShack and Red Cross volunteers, Martin St. John, Tom Hamilton, and Steve Meissner helped assemble the crates to secure a safe environment for evacuated pets.

It was a great relief for evacuees who had camped out in the parking lot to finally leave their vehicles and relax at the shelter, setting up their cots to grab some sorely needed rest.

Firefighters and residents reported loss of wildlife and animals. The Esperanza fire burned 34 homes, consumed 40,000 acres and cost five Firefighters their lives before it was contained four days later on October 30. Firefighting operations cost nearly $10 million.

MuttShack Animal Rescue is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization active in disasters and dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and care of lost or discarded dogs, cats and other animals.

The Lowdown On Mf Schemes

byadmin

Big incomes and yet a burned hole in the pocket at the end of the day…, Does that describe you accurately? If so then mutual funds would suit you to a T.

After all, what other investment option allows you to keep your money relatively safe while assuring you healthy returns? Attractive!

So what is a mutual fund?

Simply put, a mutul fund is a trust that pools together the money of different investors and invests them in various money market investments. It is managed by a professional fund manager who trades(buys and sells) in accordance with the investment strategy or objective. The incomes or gains realized from trading are then distributed back to the investors in proportion to their original investments into the fund.

With regard to returns disribution, Mutual funds usually offer three different options to investors to choose from.

* Dividend Payout,* Dividend Re-investment, and the* Growth option.

An propspective investor must choose carefully which options suits him or her best.

Growth or dividend?

The dividend option enables you to partially cash in on the returns earned by the fund from time to time through the dividends that it declares, whereas the returns in growth option are retained in the MF and reflect as an appreciation in the fund’s Net Asset Value (NAV). However, the dividend does not in any way add to your returns from the fund though it presents a great opportunity to get periodic payouts on a high-yield investment.

The Dividend Re-investment option authorises the fund to plough back the dividends declared into the fund at the prevailing NAV, also fetching you more units. It is voluntary to participate in these plans, but if you elect to, you’ll receive additional shares in the company instead of, and to the value of the cash dividend you would otherwise receive. In terms of its effect on your returns, the Dividend Re-investment option is no different from the Growth option.

The Dividend Re-investment option is the superior option for investors who yearn for tax efficiency and are willing to remain invested in equities through stock market ups and downs. If you need liquidity, you can clear up a part of your holdings at NAV.

One of the appealing features of Dividend payouts is that it helps you re-balance your equity holdings when the markets are bullish, guarding you to an extent against a decline in values. The down side is that it is a `set and forget’ strategy that could result in an opportunity loss in a rising market.

The right choice

Now that you have made a thoughtful decision to invest, you are bound to read about, hear about, or experience the risks involved. All funds fluctuate and choosing the right fund requires finding both a fund with a successful track record and one that also meets your investment objectives.

The prospectus states purchase redemption and annual fees as well as statistics such as turnover ratios (the frequency of liquidations within the fund). Sensibility lies in creating a diversified portfolio that mixes stock funds, international funds, bond funds and other specialty funds.

If are you searching for capital appreciation. then you might desire a growth or aggressive growth fund; if you are looking for safety, choose balanced fund and if you are looking to invest in a certain sector such as technology, pick a sector-based fund.

Because, deciding on the correct option is perhaps as important to the health of the investment as choosing the particular mutual fund is.

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Presidential aides and state television announced yesterday that the Nigerian president, Umaru Yar’Adua, died.

Yar’Adua ascended to the presidency in 2007, but was later taken ill, and had not been publicly seen for the last few months. He was hospitalised in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to get inflammated tissue around his heart treated; it was later diagnosed as acute pericarditis.

According to the BBC, Nigerian reports indicated the president died between 21.00 and 22.00 local time (20.00 to 21.00 UTC) in Abuja, the capital.

Goodluck Jonathan, the vice-president, became the acting president this February; under the constitution, he is to now be sworn in formally and will appoint a new vice-president.

The Nigerian Television Authority broadcast the news, saying: “The president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, died a few hours ago at the presidential villa. Security aides notified the national security adviser, General Anou Bissou, who immediately called the acting president. The late president has been ill for some time.”

Ima Niboro, a spokesman for Goodluck Jonathan, commented: “The acting president is very sad with what has happened. The nation is mourning.” Tomorrow is to be a national holiday, and Nigeria will observe a week of mourning for the deceased president.

In his statement, acting president Jonathan said: “Nigeria has lost the jewel on its crown, and even the heavens mourn with our nation tonight.”

4 Useful Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Title Tags

Submitted by: Allision Kraft

One of the first things any good search engine optimisation company will notice about your site is the title tags. They re so important when it come to SEO that you really can t afford to lose any of their potential. Google s advice in their guide to good SEO is that they are very important, surely evidence enough that you need to take great care over their construction!

As Google assert throughout their own guide, good practice is what s going to get score you points with search engines when it comes to getting onto search results pages. With this in mind, you won t need to be told that the title of a page ought to offer a concise and accurate

eflection of its contents.

The title tag is a crucial element of a site for both users and search engines. Almost every SEO expert agrees that they are the most important place to feature keywords.

Before moving on to our four tips to help you get the most out of title tags, let s consider the important places where we find title tags. In the uppermost space on internet browser software we ll find a title tag. While it s not the place on a page that receives the most direct attention from users, it s still a very prominent position. Another very important place we find title tags is on search engine results pages. Keywords in title tags will be highlighted there after a user has performed a query. Seeing the title tag for your site leads users to you, and that s what s important.

Having established that title tags are extremely important, let s move on to our four tips. We hope you ll enjoy reading them and they ll give you some good ideas!

1. Short is usually sweet. Search engines will not display title tags that are over 70 characters long. If a title tag does exceed that length, a series of dots will indicate that it had to be cut short. Search engine optimisation services agree that staying within 70 characters is advisable. Having said that, if your SEO strategy involves featuring multiple keywords in the title tag you might want to consider making it longer. Bear in mind that Google advise you to keep it short!

2. Feature important keywords near the beginning of the title tag. Know the importance of keywords and get advice from a good search engine optimization agency about getting the most out of them. One of the things they ll almost certainly advise is that you position keywords close to the beginning. This is because it s almost certainly more helpful from a ranking standpoint. Not only that, it gets the attention of users too!

3. Think about your brand. Why not consider the potential for using the title tag for a little extra exposure? You ll need to decide whether this fits in with your overall strategies, but if it does then why not open the title tag with a mention of your brand. You might decide that it s more important to feature keywords there, and some search engine optimization services advocate featuring the name of the brand at the end of a title tag instead of the front. You can get advice and decide what s best for your company!

4. Think about reaction. An emotive title tag might invite more actual hits than a bland one, unless your area of business involves a high degree of specialised functionality. Think about keyword usage, but also consider the impact of your title tag as a whole. This applies particularly to those of you who have opted for a shorter, punchier title tag. Consider the experience of the user now as at every stage of designing a site. The title tag needs to be useful but it also needs to fit into the user s experience well. If yours is a trendy site, for example, you ll want a trendy title tag! Try to use the title tag to convey something about your attitude and your product. It s a vital opportunity since more people are likely to see it than most of your other content.

In conclusion, take care of your title tags and they ll take care of you. Don t let traffic pass you by through allowing your title tags to languish like broken signposts at the side of a busy road. Think about employing a reputable search engine optimisation company to help get the most out of title tags, keywords and everything else!

Australian TV show The Chaser breaches APEC security; 11 charged

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, September 6, 2007

Eight cast and crew members of the Australian television show The Chaser’s War on Everything successfully breached the security surrounding the APEC summit meeting in Sydney, Australia.

Using a cavalcade of three cars and two motorcycles branded with the Canadian Flag, the crew passed through two security check points, reaching the “red zone”. It was only when the team attempted to turn around, ten meters from the InterContinental Hotel where United States President George W Bush was staying, that police realised the security breach and pounced.

Eleven people have been charged over the incident, the eight cast and crew members and the three drivers. Two motor bike drivers at the front were told to run and police are currently searching for them. Comedian and cast member Chas Licciardello was dressed up as Osama bin Laden during the event.

All 11 have been bailed to appear in court on October 4, 2007.

New South Wales minister for police denied that the security services had been embarrassed by the event. A police statement said that the shows producers had been cautioned a week beforehand about trying any stunts during the APEC meetings.

The Chaser had tried unsuccessfully yesterday to breach security when they dressed up as a NSW Police horse.

On April 25, 2007 The Chaser successfully asked Jimbo Wales 10 questions during his visit to Sydney as a part of a segment for The Chaser’s War on Everything series.
