Second Darwin’s sandwich shop opens in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

Thursday, June 2, 2005

Darwin’s Ltd. opened a second location of their sandwich shop at 1613 Cambridge Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in late May. It is situated across from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Previously limited to one location at 148 Mount Auburn Street, the second store seats approximately 30 people and sells sandwiches, coffee drinks, locally made pastries, as well as some produce and snack foods. The establishment also provides free wireless access through the WanderingWifi service. The shop plays music during the day; during this reporter’s visit to the shop, selections played ranged from David Bowie to The Strokes. The store is air-conditioned.

Key differences between the original store and the new one include the unification of the cafe and the sandwich line now behind one counter, handicap accessible restrooms, no beer or wine sold at location, and a lack of a loyal customer base. Although the recent months have been slow, business is expected to pick up with the return of Cambridge area students this autumn.

While the original location of Darwin’s was recently cited for lacking sneeze guards before the kitchen counter, according to the Cambridge Chronicle, the new Darwin’s has acrylic sheets along the front of their sandwich counter. The original Darwin’s has installed the sneeze guard at the kitchen counter the day following citation.

The Real Story Behind Birchfields Cheesecake Legacy Lady}

Submitted by: Scarlett O’Cheesecake

The supposedly good natured rivalry in Birchfield among the towns best cooks was the biggest scam ever perpetuated within a county noted for sleights of hand.

Back in 1747, Joshua Prentiss won a drinking contest and possession of Nathaniel Mapletons pregnant mare by quaffing more tankards of plain apple juice than Nathaniel did of spirits-charged cider. Mapleton spent the night on the tavern floor while Joshua Prentiss pretended to reel out into the dark and then, straight and tall in the saddle, rode his newly acquired mare to her new home. He bedded down on clean straw in a stall next to the mares on the chance the tavern wench he had bribed might sell him out, but she did no such thing. Instead, Peggy Wilson walked half the night to the Prentiss farm and scared Joshua half to death when she lay down on the hay beside him. He made a quick recovery. Peggy never returned to the tavern. They married and their first child was born about the same time the mare foaled. The baby was christened Joshua Prentiss II and the colt was named Rascal, but as it turned out, the names could have been interchangeable.

Throughout the next 172 years, the Prentiss brood prospered whereas Nathaniel Mapletons lineage had bad luckuntil Lettie Mapleton was born. Feisty from the moment she drew breath until she died in 2005, a non-virginal old maid, Lettie was a force of nature. She had no patience for the familys lamentations about their hardscrabble plight. On scholarships she earned and student loans she borrowed, she achieved an MBA, a doctorate in economics, chucked the corporate world to write one best-selling historical novel after another”bodice rippers”all based somewhat on the bad blood between and Prentiss dynasty and the Mapleton family tree. For relaxation, she turned her talent in the kitchen into a thriving business, and the signature delicacy of her wares (other than her own considerable charms) was her acclaimed cheesecake.

Known to only Lettie, the recipe lived in her head, not on paper. She prepared a dozen or so cheesecakes once a week when she was alone in her sprawling house. Most were pre-ordered but the rest, pardon the expression, sold like hotcakes. Some called for fresh berries, others for drizzled chocolate or her own raspberry preserve. Occasionally a customer requested nut piecesalmonds, walnuts, pecans. Those customers whose cheesecake called for whipped cream were handed a separate container filled with crme de la crme whipped just shy of turning into butter. Letties mini farm included a dozen Jersey cows and a flock of laying hens. Nothing but the best.

When Lettie died at age 85, passing peacefully while asleep into her next adventure, the good cooks and bakers in Birchfield rejoiced. Not because they disliked Lettieeveryone either liked her or got a kick out of her; she had no enemies, other than the giant food conglomerates who tried repeatedly to beg, borrow or steal her cheesecake recipebut with Lettie gone, Birchfields bakeoffs and harvest fair competitions would not be dominated by Letties culinary gifts.

But thats not what happened. A young man began living in Letties house. Who was he? Her grandson, thats who! And he had the birth certificate, DNA certification, and a notarized statement in Letties handwriting, all of which attested to the fact that a love affair between Lettie Mapleton and Nate Prentiss had produced a child who then parented Nathaniel Prentiss, III. Yes, that Nathaniel Prentiss, the owner of the two most exciting fine dining experiencesone in L.A., the other in New York City. And he was determined to give full rein to the genes he had inherited.

The Birchfield women organized: all cooking and baking competitions would be limited to females only. Nathaniel Prentiss III laughed. He had no intention of entering. His plan was to foster the talent already displayed by his young daughter. Peggy Mapleton Prentiss had inherited her great-grandmothers ability to create a new cheesecake recipe that blew away all competition.

The good ladies of Birchfield sighed and bowed to the inevitable.

Calls for bottled water bans grow in Canada

Saturday, August 23, 2008

London, Ontario is the latest in a string of Canadian cities to have acted on increasing public demand to ban bottled water. On Monday, the decision to eliminate bottled water sales in city-run facilities was passed by London’s city council with a vote of 15-3 in favour. The move was driven by a desire to reduce waste and shipping, have a lower impact on the environment and promote tap water as a cheap and safe alternative.

London’s new restrictions will be implemented over the next several months in buildings that are already equipped with water fountains. Bottled water will still be permitted at many city-run events, such as upcoming summer festivals. Privately-owned retailers will not be affected by the ban.

Other cities, such as Vancouver, Ottawa and Kitchener, that are already engaged in debate on the issue, may now be watching London carefully for how the ban plays out. Other areas have already begun to phone London with questions on the details of its new regulations. Toronto has begun taking a look at bottled water packaging as part of its waste diversion strategy, and its public school board is looking into the possibility of a total restriction on bottled water sales.

In recent years, an awareness of the energy that is required to manufacture, transport and recycle the product has spread nation-wide. Proponents of the ban point to the fact that it can produce as much as 150 times the volume of greenhouse gas when producing bottled water as compared to supplying the same volume of tap water. They also point out that the water that goes into bottled water products is not inspected as frequently as tap water in Canadian cities.

Some have taken this cause to heart more than others, such as British Environment Minister Phil Woolas, who called the use of bottled water “morally unacceptable.” Restaurant critic Giles Coren of The Times of London criticizes those who use the product as “the new smokers.”

Canada’s beverage industry has come down with criticism on the increasing opposition to bottled water. Spokesman Scott Tabachnick for Coca-Cola Co., which produces Dasani brand bottled water, commented on the convenience of the product: “It’s hard to bring your kitchen sink with you.”

It’s hard to bring your kitchen sink with you.

Vancouver City Councillor Tim Stevenson thinks that bottled water’s time has come and gone: “Bottled water companies have had a fabulous ride on an unnecessary fad.” Vancouver officials are still determining how bottled water restrictions, which have been voted for by the City Council, can be phased in.

Next month, the city is planning to initiate a marketing campaign encouraging Vancouver residents to choose tap water and to remember to carry reusable drinking containers whenever possible.

Renowned environmental activist Dr. David Suzuki has praised London’s decision, saying that it represents a turning point for people’s perceptions on the issue: “I’m really delighted that London has done this because it really makes us focus on some fundamental issues.” He hopes that someday people will “look at anyone who hauls out a bottle of water and say, ‘What the hell’s wrong with you?'”

Somali hospital hit by shells after continued unrest

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

The Somali Transitional Federal Government (TFG), the internationally recognized government of the former state of Somalia, could not stop an attack conducted by insurgents in the capital as they shelled the city’s port; but, some rounds fell short which led to dozens of casualties.

Late last week, Somali insurgents conducted a mortar attack in downtown Mogadishu missing their intended target at the city’s seaport; instead, hitting a veteran’s hospital killing between 6 and 9 former soldiers and wounding at least 12 others. Many of the hospital’s patients are veterans from Somalia’s 1977 conflict with Ethiopia in the Ogaden, according to government spokesman Shiek Abdirisaq Qeylow. The disabled veterans were gathering and chatting in the hospital’s courtyard ready for the iftar (Futuru), the feast that breaks the dawn-to-dusk fast observed during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, when the shells fell, according to the Associated Free Press. Their home, De Martino Hospital, was collateral damage in what was meant to be an attack on the seaport according to Mohamed Abdiazis, a Somali Policeman. Victims were taken to the Medina Hospital which is where four of the victims died. Eyewitnesses said that several rounds hit the seaport and the main jail.

Although no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, Al-Shabab, the militant youth group that has now taken the reigns of the insurgency in Somalia after the dissolution of the Islamic Courts Union, is widely suspected. Al-Shabab seeks to institute the strictest sense of Shari’a Law in Somalia and is a seam of contention for their participation in the government. Earlier this year, the newly elected Somali President agreed to implement tenets of Shar’ia into the nation’s statutory codes, however negotiations quickly broke down over the details.

While the TFG has made attempts to quell violence in the capital and in other parts of Somalia, little success has been realized. The government relies on assistance from the African Union to maintain some semblance of order in Mogadishu. Parts of the country like Somaliland in the north have claimed de-facto independence in the absence of a central government capable of protecting all parts of the country.

UK PM’s speechwriter awaits sentence

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

An English lawyer has pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. He faked a legal judgment and sent it to a father who was pleading in Taunton family court to be able to remain involved in his child’s upbringing. The lawyer, London barrister Bruce Hyman, now awaits his sentence. The judge indicated that he could receive a prison sentence. Bruce Hyman is well-known in media circles, having produced The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on BBC Radio. He also produced a series with Clive Anderson, at Above the Title Productions, called Unreliable Evidence.

The father, a former City financier, had attended a series of court hearings in order to make suitable arrangements to see his child following an acrimonious divorce. Shortly before one of these hearings he received an email, ostensibly from a self-help group to which he belonged, which had attached a Court of Appeal case that appeared favourable to an application he had made for the judge to stand down from the case. The father, who was representing himself, duly showed the case to the judge. At this point, Bruce Hyman, the lawyer representing the former wife, claimed to the judge that the case was a forgery, which indeed it turned out to be.

After confirming that the self-help group had not sent him the email, the father then embarked on some detective work his own. The fraudulent email was traced via its header to a dial-up internet connection and a phone number belonging to a shop in London. The shop was able to recover CCTV footage which showed a man sending the email from an Apple laptop. The man turned out to be Bruce Hyman.

Sentencing of Hyman is due in Bristol Crown Court on the 19th of September.

Fleet means a number of vehicles together. Many times there are more than one or two trucks that need to be delivered and in such cases you need a company that specialises in fleet delivery. This is important as the trucks need to leave and arrive at the same time. Also they all need to stay together which can be a difficult co-ordination task that requires management skills.

Bus/Truck Delivery

Truck moving companies also offer to transport buses. Most truck drivers are adept at driving different types of buses like coaches, school buses, public transport buses, etc which is an added bonus. Truck Shows, Field Days – These are special shows where potential buyers and sellers all display their truck models. These companies require these trucks to be brought from the showroom to the venue for display.

Commercial vehicles & Truck liquidation sales – There are many sale expos for commercial vehicles and liquidation sales are available as well. In such cases the trucks need to be transported to the venue.

Repossession – In case the loans are not paid on the trucks or vehicles on time then they need to be repossessed by the financial companies.

Television (TV) & radio stations vehicles – The television and radio station vehicles constantly need heavy trucks to move their equipment around and so these truck delivery companies come in handy.

OB Providers (Outside broadcasts vehicles) – These again need heavy equipment to be carted around.

Australian solar racing team parades at Sydney campus send-off

Friday, September 20, 2013

Australian solar racing team Sunswift paraded their fifth car, eVe, on the Kensington campus of the University of New South Wales, Sydney, yesterday. They are leaving for the 2013 World Solar Challenge this weekend. Both staff and students came to the send-off event in the early afternoon.

The vehicle route led from the biomed lawn of Michael Birt Gadrens in upper Kensington Campus down the University Mall to Anzac Parade with a few stops along the way at Commerce Courtyard and Globe Lawn. The driver, as well as the passenger, alighted as six members of the team carried eVe over the stairs of University Mall.

eVe, the latest car built by the Sunswift team, was designed for the new Cruiser class of the competition, and thus meets regulations for normal roads-worthy vehicles. While its predecessor IVy weighed under 150 kg, eVe weighs approximately 300 kg, with light carbon fiber monocoque construction and 15 kWh batteries weighing only 63 kg. However, eVe has achieved a similar drag coefficient, despite different overall shape and larger frontal area.

The 2013 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is to take place on October 6–13, 2013.

Front Yard Landscaping For Dummies

Front yard landscaping for dummies

by

Marshall Julian

Front yard landscaping plans needs to be such that it merges the man made house with natural elements easily and softens the general look. Front yard landscape ought to be an inviting place which directs the visitor to the house easily. Certain principles needs to be taken into account when you are creating your yard landscape design. Given listed here are some landscaping plans and ideas which will help in creating your entry landscape.

The Layout Plan There are 2 forms of layout designs, the symmetrical design and also the asymmetrical design. No matter which pattern you choose, it’s important that you balance out every one of the elements of the landscape, and importantly produce a feeling of unity inside elements. Symmetrical designs means using a mirror like division with the entry and house. Symmetrical designs are suitable for houses that have a central driveway and door in the heart of your house, and equal variety of windows on both sides from the door. For such houses, a symmetrical landscape design is useful. In a symmetrical design, plant the sun and rain inside the yard like bushes in almost many of us to give a well-balanced look. Though, symmetrical landscape design could be a bit difficult to achieve, they compliment nicely with houses that have symmetrical design and a formal look. Alternatively asymmetrical designs give a more stimulating look and so are better to create and plan. However, it is important that you simply balance the asymmetrical landscaping plans in front of the house properly. Also, arrange every one of the elements in such a way that everything provides feeling of unity. A good example of asymmetrical landscape design would be having the location from the pavement somewhere towards the left side of the house. To balance this house, plant the shrubs and bushes as you’re watching house, on either side from the pavement and trees at the edges of your home. You can observe inside the top and middle image, entry landscaping plans which stick to the asymmetrical pattern. This was about planning the fundamental layout, which lays down the foundation of the softscape and hardscape elements. Adding Softscape Elements The softscape materials or elements utilized in front yard landscaping plans would be the plants, for example, the trees, shrubs, flowering plants, the lawn, etc. After deciding your layout, you have to create a wise collection of the timber that you simply desire to plant inside your entry. Make sure you opt for the bushes which can be a variety of two seasons, so that they help to accentuate the yard in the summer and winter weather. Another essential point in choosing the shrubs and trees is ensuring that trees and shrubs together are compatible. It is advisable to choose native plants, because they have previously adapted towards the soil, water and weather. The proper placement of the shrubs and the trees is essential, so keep in mind these front yard landscaping ideas. Never plant trees right in front of the house, and steer clear of planting the shrubs too near to the pavement or driveway. Shrubs needs to be planted on each side of the driveway, and should be placed in a bizarre numbered number of 3 or 5. While planting trees, think about the size and space an adult tree will require and possess enough area surrounding it. Plant the trees in the edges of your home, to soften the pointed edges of the roof. It is possible to plant some trees at the front end near the edges of your home, and few at the back, that will blend the man made house nicely within the entry and backdrop. To include flowers for the yard, be sure you just choose a few quantity of plants like 2 – 3 flowers of contrasting colors, and prevent a riot of colours. Too many accents needs to be avoided, as it will spoil the appearance. You will see at the center image, there are very few flowering plants, but nonetheless the home and the yard looks good and inviting. Even without adding any flower plants, you can develop a beautiful front yard landscape. For ground cover, you can either go for a lawn, or spread plants evenly which may have a maximum expansion of around one foot. Selecting hedges is about you, according to whether you’ll need a screen and boundary around your home. Ensure you select the hedge type wisely, and plant it around 15 – 20 feet from the street. Adding Hardscape Elements The hardscape materials or structural materials would be the fences, walls, paving, etc. Ensure you use a driveway which can be around 10 feet wide, if your driveway also serves as the street leading to your front door, make it wider. This makes walking on the driveway easy when a car is parked about the driveway, preventing stepping on the lawn. There are many selection of materials for that pavements. Apply for a brick wall which is the most attractive material, or choose stone, wood or concrete material. Many people also choose metal fences just like the one shown in the centre image, but a majority of prefer the traditional wooden fences. When you have a more impressive budget, and good level of space then you can consider going for a secluded courtyard design, or accent your yard having a water fountain or a garden pond. They were some guidelines that will actually create leading yard landscaping plans according to the individual’s choice of house design. So, be sure you bear in mind every one of the important points, and design a front yard landscape which looks good and is also inviting.

Chemical plant fire decimates Danvers, Massachusetts neighboorhood

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

According to outgoing Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, an explosion that was “equivalent to a 2,000 lb. bomb” and registered 0.5 on the Richter scale decimated an area of Danvers and is also a “Thanksgiving miracle.”

The explosion occurred around 2:45 am EST, this morning in the Danversport area of Danvers, Massachusetts at the plant for solvent and ink manufacturer, CAI Inc. The explosion, which was caught on security camera and was heard up to over 25-50 miles away in southern Maine and New Hampshire.

The explosion damaged over 90 homes, blowing out windows and knocking some houses off their foundations. Officials believe that some of the more extensively damaged houses will have to be leveled and rebuilt. Some of the buildings damaged included a bakery, boats at a close by marina and the New England Home for the Deaf, an assisted-living facility for people who are deaf or deafblind and elderly residents requiring constant care. “These people are extremely fragile,” said state Rep. Ted Speliotis, D-Danvers, whose district includes the affected area. “Many of them have Alzheimer’s and other illnesses. It’s clear they can’t stay here long, but it’s clear they won’t be able to return for quite a while.”

Danvers Fire Chief James P. Tutko toured the area by helicopter and said many residents would be kept from their homes for the foreseeable future. “It looks like a war zone, that’s the only thing I can say,” Tutko said. When asked about the loss of no life at all, he responded “Somebody out there likes us.” Finally, he said that finding out the cause of the explosion would take days.

Outgoing governor Mitt Romney toured the area and said the explosion was a “Thanksgiving miracle” as the explosion was “equivalent to a 2,000 lb bomb going off in a residential neighborhood,” and that no one was killed and only about 10 people suffered only minor injuries in area that included over 300 residents. Residents of the area have been evacuated to the Danvers High School where temporary shelter has been set up by the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay. Donations are being taken for residents affected by the explosion. Residents are also being told to start filing insurance claims right away and to keep track of their expenses for items bought.

There were minor environmental concerns due to water runoff of chemicals. According the Environmental Protection Agency‘s on-scene coordinator Mike Nalipinski, preliminary tests showed low levels of toluene, a solvent, but said it was nothing of significance. Water runoff from the water used by firefighters left a purple sheen on the river and tests were being conducted. However, the water is not a local drinking water supply and the chemical evaporates quickly. Chief Tutko said there was no risk of toxic fumes getting into the air.

An Eastern Propane facility was also located near the area, however, it was not the source of the explosion. A spokesman for the company said that although the property suffered some minor damage, their tanks are secure.

According to WHDH television, a person who answered the telephone at CAI’s Georgetown, Massachusetts headquarters refused comment, and a telephone message left at the company president’s home was not immediately returned.
